The Oxford Dictionary defines Biomechanics as “The study of the mechanical laws relating to the movement or structure of living organisms.”
A Biomechanical Assessment is both the static and dynamic examination and assessment of joint complexes (foot and ankle, knee, hips and spinal column) and their interrelationships, under both weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing conditions.
At AC Podiatry these examinations and assessments are made by clinical observation and quantification of:
The position of joint axes and the functional segments of the body;
The quality, range and direction of motion of joints and functional limb segments; and
Observation, quantification and examination of limb function during gait and movement
Many sporting and overuse injuries can be due, at least in part, to flaws in an individual’s biomechanics. For example, Tibialis Posterior Dysfunction is generally seen in people who have poor foot posture (in particular flat feet), weak calf and gluteal (bottom) muscles and restriction through the ankle joint. These biomechanical flaws cause an “overloading” of the tendon which, over time, results in pain and dysfunction. Obviously if improved prior to injury, we can effectively reduce the risk of injury.
In addition to injury prevention or rehabilitation, improving biomechanics can assist people perform their chosen sport or activity better. This does not just pertain to elite athletes but rather any sportsperson or individual who wants to improve his/her performance?
